The prestige of calligraphy is evident throughout cultural history wherever the copying of sacred texts is itself considered a sacred act, as is traditionally the case in Christianity with the copying of the Bible, or in Islam, where the Basmala is the most common calligraphic form.
Even today, calligraphy remains important and inspiring for Chinese and Japanese writing culture. More important than legibility is the achievement of perfect aesthetic balance and the expression of emotions.

Calamos (Greek) or Calamus (Latin) refers to the writing reed made from reeds. The reed pen was used throughout antiquity and into the modern era. In the Middle Ages, writing was done with ink on parchment or papyrus.
In the school subject of penmanship, legible handwriting is taught, not calligraphy ;-)
