A calamus (Greek) or calamus (Latin) is the name given to a writing reed made from reeds. Reed pens were used throughout antiquity and into the modern era. In the Middle Ages, writing was done with ink on parchment or papyrus.

The natural reed is cut at an angle, and the tip is split. Due to wear, the reed must be recut during use. With the angled reed pen, varying line thicknesses can be achieved by changing the angle of the hand and arm.
