Schreiber-Bogen - Roman siege tower
This model shows the typical features of a Roman siege tower. On wheels, the tower was moved as close as possible to the wall of the besieged city.
The Romans used siege towers since the 2nd century BC. They built their first towers on the Greek model. To enable the towers to be moved, the terrain was levelled or ramps were built. A movable battering ram was attached to the lower part. From the floors above, the soldiers could cross over to the walls of the besieged city with the help of a drop bridge. Archers were placed on the top platform.
