The Cartesian Diver
Product number:
416.CRT
Handcrafted Cartesian diver made of glass, which demonstrates the interplay of pressure, density and buoyancy in a playful way.
The oldest physical toy in the world
named after the French philosopher René Descartes (1596-1650), still amazes 360 years after its invention. The little glass leprechaun is placed in a bottle filled with water and sealed with a rubber stopper (but it also works with a PET bottle). If you press on the stopper (or the PET bottle), the diver sinks; if you take back the pressure, he rises again, while also turning on his own axis. The little devil dances
Even if it looks like magic - there is a solid physical explanation for it. It has to do with an air-filled cavity in the diver and a small opening in it - more will not be revealed here. You have to see it for yourself and make the diver dance with your own hands to believe it! Have fun with this handicraft from a glassblowing workshop. The Cartesian diver is carefully crafted by hand. Small variations in shape and design are normal and make each piece unique.
Warning! The Cartesian diver is not a toy and is intended for educational and demonstration purposes only.
