The Dove prism
Erecting prism made of acrylic glass
Image inversion by total internal reflection
Erecting prism made of high-quality PMMA (acrylic glass) named after its inventor, the physicist and meteorologist Heinrich W. Dove (1803–1879).
Its trapezoidal cross-section makes it optimized for image inversion by total internal reflection, unlike rectangular prisms, whose upper half (the "roof tip") is not involved. In image inversion by total internal reflection, only the two inclined surfaces and the underside of the prism are optically effective.
Tip: In the reversal AstroMedia glasses you can experience the reversal image in perfection 579.UBR.
