Galileo Galilei did not invent the thermometer, but he did discover the principle on which it works. In a glass flask filled with liquid, there are floating bodies of the same size but different weights and thus also different densities: in this case, glass spheres. When the liquid heats up, it expands, thus reducing its density. The spheres with higher weight (higher density) sink to the bottom. If the liquid cools down, it contracts and its density increases. Now the colored glass balls rise to the top again.

The degree labels hanging from the glass balls tell the observer the temperature to within 1°. An instructive and practical instrument, a beautiful room decoration and a successful gift.

Note: The Galileo thermometer is made of glass with an oil-alcohol mixture sealed inside. Therefore, it is not a children's toy.
