The Lighthouse of Alexandria
Cut-out model sheet of the Lighthouse of Alexandria
The Lighthouse of Pharos was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Located in front of the ancient metropolis of Alexandria, it became the symbol of all lighthouses.
The light from the open flame at its top guided approaching ships. There was a viewing platform below, and the tower was also used to defend the harbor.
Several earthquakes completely destroyed this masterpiece of Hellenistic engineering.
