The Pythagoras Shift - AstroMedia
Everyone has probably heard this at school: "a-squared plus b-squared equals c-squared". And then on the blackboard it said: a2 + b2 = c2.
This means: For every right-angled triangle, the square under the longest side (the hypotenuse) is exactly as big as the sum of the squares over the two shorter sides (the cathets).
The Pythagorean Shift is a simple and quickly completed kit that consists of a postcard-sized cardboard pocket with a movable tongue inside. When it is moved, the surface of the large square begins to move upwards and flow into the other two squares. This creates the intuitive feeling in the user that the thing about equal areas just has to be right.
For pupils and teachers
The assembly of the Pythagorean Shift is done quickly: The cardboard parts are cut out and glued together. The shift is ideal for teaching at secondary schools, but also as material for other group and project work in the field of mathematics.
