Product information "The Qumran Scrolls Vessel"
The Qumran Dead Sea Scrolls were found from 1947 to 1956 in caves high in the rock near the ruined site of Qumran in the West Bank. The writings now comprise some 15,000 fragments made of papyrus or metal, of which more than 800 are Judaic scrolls.

The Qumran scrolls were written down between 250 BC and 40 AD. Among these texts alone are 200 writings of the oldest known manuscripts of the Bible. The scrolls were brought to safety from the Roman invaders and deposited in clay jars, like this one, in the caves to protect them.

This extraordinary clay vessel is turned by hand on the potter's wheel. Thus, as in antiquity, each piece is unique and no two are alike. The total height is 33-35 cm and the outer diameter 14-15 cm. This gives you enough space for papyrus and scrolls in the vessel.
