Anyone who has ever turned on the light at night will know: At first you are blinded and can't see anything. If you turn the light off again, it takes quite a while for the eye to get used to the darkness again. Our vision is impaired again.
This is due to rhodopsin, a pigment that the eye produces in the dark and which increases the eye's sensitivity to light many times over. White light breaks down the pigment within a very short time, the sensitivity to light is greatly reduced - hence the sensation of being almost blind.
Red light, on the other hand, has no effect on the rhodopsin. This makes our mini torch with red LED a faithful companion for all stargazers - for easy finding your way in the dark without impairing your eyesight.
