The Sphinx of Giza is a hybrid of a lion's body and a human head and is considered the guardian of the royal tombs in Giza.

The head probably represents King Khafre, which can be recognised by the facial features, the headdress and the beard, which is missing today - the Nemes headscarf is a purely royal feature. Therefore, sphinxes are usually masculine.

The sphinx, or in ancient Egyptian Schesep-Anch, meaning "living image", was repeatedly covered with shifting sand over the centuries. (Picture above right) Over the millennia, the rock layers of the Sphinx were weathered in waves by constant erosion. The face has suffered such severe damage that the facial features are hardly recognisable.
