Our papyrus range
We offer light-coloured, handmade natural papyrus from Egypt. From the size of a bookmark to A4 and A3 to oversized sheets measuring 92 x 192 cm, as well as a wide variety of papyrus scrolls, you are sure to find the right papyrus sheet for your needs. The design possibilities with papyrus are endless. It can be inscribed with hieroglyphics or painted with a wide variety of motifs. Tempera or watercolours, ink or felt-tip pens are suitable for this purpose; it can even be printed on with an inkjet printer.
Papyrus is a natural product
Papyrus sheets are still produced in the traditional way in the Nile Delta today. Families in rural areas harvest the papyrus stalks, which can grow up to 6 metres high, and skilfully process the raw material into papyrus sheets. Carefully crafted papyri are produced in several steps, each with its own individual, handcrafted character.
History
Papyrus has been produced in Ancient Egypt since the 3rd millennium BC and used as a writing material. It was always a highly prized product, the sole marketing rights to which belonged to the pharaoh. The German word ‘Papier’ (paper) comes from the Greek word “pápyros”, which in turn is based on the ancient Egyptian word ‘pa-en-per-aa’, which roughly means ‘that of the pharaoh’.
When stored in dry conditions, papyrus has a very long lifespan. Papyrus scrolls and fragments have been found time and again that provide information about life in ancient Egypt. Among the most famous papyrus scrolls are the Herculaneum Papyri, which were buried and thus preserved by the violent eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. More than 400,000 papyri from ancient Oxyrhynchus are still waiting to be deciphered and will bring many more interesting discoveries to light. Julius Caesar is responsible for what is probably the greatest loss of knowledge in history. His soldiers set fire to the Library of Alexandria, destroying thousands of important papyrus writings.

PGI sources Egyptian products directly from the producer. This allows us to bypass distributors and offer our customers favourable prices.
