Antique papyrus is the term for very dark papyrus sheets. It is produced in modern-day Egypt under particularly elaborate conditions. The production of antique papyrus differs fundamentally from the production of light-colored natural papyrus. Detailed information about the production process can be found under "Product Attachments."

This is how history can be "grasped"! Antique papyrus is particularly suitable for crafts and decorations. It can also be written on and painted, but due to its dark color, the designs will not be as visible as on light-colored papyrus. However, antique papyrus was used extensively in antiquity; its dark color also has its own unique appeal.

Antique papyrus finds versatile applications in the arts and museum education. Ideal for themed school and art lessons. It is also excellent for crafts, bookbinding, decorations, or creating something truly unique.

Papyrus is a natural product.
In the Nile Delta, papyrus sheets are still produced using traditional methods. Families in the countryside harvest the papyrus stalks, which can grow up to 6 meters tall, and skillfully process the raw material into papyrus sheets. Through several steps, carefully crafted papyri are created, each exhibiting a unique, handcrafted character.

History
Since the 3rd millennium BC, papyrus has been produced and used as a writing material in ancient Egypt. It was always a highly valued product, the exclusive marketing rights of which belonged to the Pharaoh. The German word "Papier" (paper) derives from the Greek word "pápyros," which in turn is based on the ancient Egyptian word "pa-en-per-aa," meaning roughly "that of the Pharaoh."

If stored dry, papyrus has a very long lifespan. Thus, papyrus scrolls or fragments have been and continue to be discovered, providing insights into life in ancient Egypt. Among the most famous papyrus scrolls are undoubtedly the Herculaneum papyri, which were buried and thus preserved by the massive eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. More than 400,000 additional papyri from ancient Egypt's Oxyrhynchus are still waiting to be deciphered and will undoubtedly bring many more fascinating discoveries to light. Julius Caesar is responsible for perhaps the greatest loss of knowledge in history. His soldiers set fire to the Library of Alexandria, destroying thousands of important papyrus scrolls.
