Ibis
The god Thoth is often depicted in human form with the head of an ibis bird. The ibis is the sacred animal of Thoth and was worshipped throughout Egypt. The ibis was often depicted in connection with writing implements, which in turn refers directly to Thoth.
The strongly curved beak of the ibis is shaped like a crescent moon. But that this bird was therefore attributed to Thoth remains questionable. The crested ibis was seen as a symbol of the transfiguration of the dead. Countless ibis mummies were found in graves. They were usually buried in groups of several in pots inscribed with consecration formulas.
