Pre-cut, very sturdy AstroMedia cardboard kit for a fully functional sextant as an introduction to astronavigation

A Revolution in Navigation

Until the introduction of satellite-based systems (GPS), the most important method for determining position on the high seas was to measure the height of a celestial body above the horizon or the distance between celestial bodies as accurately as possible. Following the quadrant and astrolabe, the Jacob's staff, and the magnetic compass, a new era in astronavigation began with the invention of the first mirror sextant. This instrument revolutionized navigation because from then on, measurements, for example, of the altitude of the sun, could be made with unsurpassed accuracy and speed.

How it works

The principle is ingenious yet astonishingly simple: A rotating mirror allows an image of the point to be measured to be aligned with the horizon or another reference point, and the distance angle can be read off a scale.

Our bestseller

The sextant has been one of our bestsellers for over 20 years. It's field-tested and boasts a display accuracy of between 5 and 10 arc minutes. With more than 50,000 units sold, it's probably the world's best-selling sextant and also offers a short introduction to the art of navigation.

We recommend the cheaper set - Sextant with Artificial Horizon, Order No.
