Product information "Papyrus Bookmarks - 10 TABULA ANSATA"

The Tabula Ansata
A tabula ansata (Latin for "panel with handles") is a rectangular inscription panel with triangular or pelmet-shaped extensions on the narrow sides. Frames in the form of a tabula ansata were a popular stylistic device in Roman antiquity for edging inscriptions. The function was to emphasise the inscription in the frame.

The oldest known tabula ansata was found in Larisa in Greece. It is a votive inscription to the god Enyalios from the 7th century BC. A tablet with bronze handles is known from Olympia from the 6th century BC.

In the Roman Empire, goose-knuckled tablets were initially only used by the military and in the cultic-sacral sphere. The Trajan column, for example, shows Roman legionaries whose scuta are provided with tabulae ansatae on which the unit affiliation is noted. Towards the end of the 2nd and in the 3rd century AD, tabulae ansatae were increasingly used on everyday objects as well. They were widespread in the area of the Roman Empire until late antiquity.
