Anubis and Mummy
Anubis is mainly depicted as a black dog, jackal or as a human with a dog or jackal head. He usually carries a was-sceptre and an anch.
He supervised the proper care of the corpse and its embalming. In the tomb, he received the mummy, performed the ceremony of opening the mouth and led the soul to the "Field of Heavenly Offerings", placing his hand protectively on the mummy.
Since the Old Kingdom, Anubis has been documented as a judge of the dead who, together with Thoth, presides over the afterlife court. His most important task was to oversee the weighing of souls, and his judgement was of vital importance.
